AVATAR is a 2009 American science fiction film written and directed by well-know movie director James Cameron. Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Michelle Rodriguez as well as Stephen Lang play the leading roles.
The term Avatar has its roots Hindu mythology. It means "god's visit to Earth to fix something that is broken". Being one of the three gods who protect creation, Vishnu visits Earth often. In Hindu mythology Vishnu is depicted dark-blue. Having been possibly inspired by Hindu mythology, James Cameron has also decided to paint the aliens blue.
Set in the future (in the year 2154) on an alien planet called Pandora situated the Alpha Centauri star system, Avatar film tells the timeless story of gluttony, immaturity and the ferocity resulting from ignorance.
The story revolves around a soldier - Jack - who flies to Pandora the planet situated in the Alpha Centauri star system to help The Corporation that wants to mine and export unobtainium - a precious mineral. The Na'vi are the alien sentient humonoid civilisation living and thriving on the moon. They are a part of a huge symbiotic living system including both animals and plants which are connected by an intricate biological interaction network. The Corporation intends to mine the moon and the Na'vi fight for their homeland. The growth and expansion of the mining colony threatens the continued existence of the local tribe.
When on a mission, Jake is taken in by the Na'vi and explores their culture, language and habitat. Natirii, the female Na'vi he meets, helps him through this journey.
Avatars are biological creations made from alien and human DNA. They are not self-aware and are controlled by a human being from whose DNA they were made. The soldier controls an avatar made from his brother's DNA.
AVATAR is an idealistic movie showing an ideal world. The ending is particularly moving. The visual effects are spectacular. Being a talented skillful movie maker, Cameron has shot one of the most carefully thought-out and consistent films. The movie is really worth watching.
