Don't have time to travel the world? Then you might want to consider the next best thing: head to New York and sample its dynamic muli-culturalism. New York City is a mesh of world cultures, seen no more clearly than in specific neighborhoods and the associated culinary delights - try the Greek neighborhood in Astoria, Queens, Chinatown in the middle of Flushing or Little Italy for size.
New York City, consisting of five boroughs and 59 community areas, is the most populous city in the United States and probably the best known city on the tourist trail. Manhattan is famed worldwide, where the business heart of New York is located along with the beloved Central Park. The super rich live here, frequenting the abundant designer boutiques and fabulous restaurants. Great shopping in the downtown area of NYC awaits those with a more modest budget.
The Bronx is famed as the birthplace of Hip Hop and the New York Yankees, while Queens and Brooklyn play host to some funky neighborhoods with great cafes and bars with a more chilled atmosphere where families of all different cultures live side-by-side. Staten Island, the original entry point to the city, makes up the fifth borough.
If you are interested in the sightseeing, the hop-on, hop-off tours are a must to get a feel for New York; there's so much more on offer than dining and shopping. From strolling - or biking - in Central Park to checking out some of the numerous famed museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York has something for everyone. Popular family destinations include the Empire State Building, Madame Tussands and the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum - and if the kids' feet are tired, take a water taxi Statue of Liberty cruise with them and enjoy the New York skyline.
As for the best time to visit New York, it's a joy all year around, but my personal favourites are Spring and Autumn, which offer all those who visit the driest and mildest conditions. Winters can be harsh yet appealing to those who wish to enjoy a true winter experience and get in the spirit of Christmas. The cheap holidays available in local retail outlets and the affordability of post-Christmas stays entice many at this off-peak time of year. The high summer can get incredibly humid and the months of July and August should generally be avoided. At any time of year, though, this hugely popular city has much to offer for each and every visitor.
